How to Find a New Home

When you are planning for your future or the future of a loved one, at some point it becomes important to talk about living options. While most people prefer to live independently for as long as they can, many of us will require some form of assistance as we age. Remember, early planning will provide a realistic picture and avoid making hasty decisions in a crisis situation. Information is the key and we can help!

Here are some important questions to consider when looking at various living options for yourself or your loved one.

Ask healthcare providers:

  1. For a copy of the most recent state survey
  2. About the ratio of residents to staff
  3. Whether they offer a continuum of care
  4. Whether residents have choices in daily menu, activities
  5. How they encourage residents to become involved in activities
  6. About their process for families and residents to share ideas and concerns
  7. About religious and spiritual services

Then…ask yourself

  1. Is the facility comfortable and home-like?
  2. Did you meet team members? If so, were they courteous, engaging and informed about the residents they served?
  3. Were your questions answered and were you provided with the information you requested?
  4. Did the residents you saw appear to be engaged and content?

Don’t forget to talk to family members and friends. And remember we are happy to be your resource no matter what your questions are. We are here for you. Just ask!
